Director David Alden followed his award-winning ENO production of Janácek's Jenufa with Lucia di Lammermoor (both productions subsequently revived) and an ecstatically received Peter Grimes. He now returns to Janácek for a new production, Katya Kabanova, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth.

Andrew Litton brings his Bergen Philharmonic to London's Cadogan Hall. As befits one of Norway's great orchestras, excerpts from Grieg's famous incidental music to Ibsen's Peer Gynt preface music by Mozart and Mahler's Fourth Symphony.

Bill Bryden's wonderful Royal Opera production of Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen, based on Stanislav Lolek's cartoons, returns to Covent Garden. Sir Charles Mackerras, who single-handedly introduced Janácek to Britain, conducts.

Philip Glass's Satyagraha, based on Gandhi's early life in South Africa, is revived at the London Coliseum in English National Opera and Metropolitan Opera's co-production. Staged by Improbable Theatre's Phelim McDermott Julian Crouch, its 2007 première was rapturously received.

The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, held at London cinemas including Brixton's Ritzy Cinema, screens world and UK premières documenting the fight to highlight injustices inflicted against humanity. It is organised by the NGO Human Rights Watch.
