On the first day, visit Donnington Castle in Newbury, built by Richard Abberbury the Elder, and later home of Thomas Chaucer, son of poet Geoffrey Chaucer. It was besieged several times by Parliamentary troops during the English Civil War, but was never taken. Today this castle is managed by the English Heritage. It is well worth a visit.

Just half an hour away, spend the rest of your day at Basildon Park, the perfect English country house in over 400 acres of parkland. You will see the house restored by Lord and Lady Life in the 1950s who filled their home with important pictures, furniture and textiles. You will find marked trails to be explored, overlooking the Thames Valley where the eighteenth century park and woodland are currently being restored.
You will enjoy a relaxing evening back at the hotel, with dinner, then it is off for more exploring the following day (following a scrumptious breakfast) with a trip to Avebury Stone Circle. You will see one of Europe's largest prehistoric stone circles, voted one of the top five most spiritual places in the country. At the museum galleries, you will discover the story of the stone circles and the people who shaped it. You will walk within the fantastic monuments and learn about the charismatic millionaire, Alexander Keiller.
